About Disc Restoration
Disc Restoration
At Disc Repair Services Ireland, most scratches and scuffs that occur to discs, can be repaired quite easily. Simply send your disc(s) to us Freepost and we shall repair them and send back to you in "As Good As New Condition".
Discs such as CDs, DVDs, Game Discs and Blu-ray discs are very susceptible to scratches. Scratches can cause many discs to skip, freeze, fail to load and many show disc read error on your disc player or gaming machine. Many music and audio CDs, software discs, photo and video discs along with DVDs and Blu-ray discs can be rendered unplayable by means of incorrect handling of these discs. This is because scratches or other marks like scuffs on the read (play) side of your discs cause the laser that scans the disc to be deflected away from the reader on your disc player and therefore does not read the data correctly, thus leading to disc error reports and frozen play etc. These days, you will find that a lot of kids and many adults also, do not handle discs with proper care. Through incorrect handling of discs, the polycarbonate plastic on discs become scratched or scuffed thus resulting in discs becoming unplayable and possible part or complete loss of data. Some marks like dirt, dust and even fingerprints on discs can render some discs unplayable.
The good news is that most scratches and scuffs can be repaired quite easily at a very affordable price rather than replace discs with new ones. The read (play) side of the disc now requires professional resurfacing and polishing with advanced equipment. Using this special advanced equipment, it is possible to restore the read side of most discs such as Game Discs, CD's, DVD's and Blu-rays (BD) discs back to a virtually new condition again.
We can fix XBOX and XBOX 360 discs with laser burn damage, circular scratches on the playside of the discs using our specialised equipment. We can restore these discs back to "As Good As New Condition".
When damaged discs are sent into us for repair, we inspect each disc to determine the severity of damage to that disc. We then repair each disc using the appropriate level of restoration that is required to virtually eliminate any scratches and then a final polishing cycle is applied. The final polishing cycle gives the disc the brilliant shiny look. The end result is that your disc looks virtually brand new with a brilliant finish. This allows the data to be read properly and accurately via the laser from your disc player or games machine.
At discRepair.ie, we can restore your discs back to 'As Good As New Condition'.
Why Would I Want to Repair My Discs?
Two good reasons! Mother Earth and Saving Money!
Approximately 4 million discs are thrown away every day,* that’s about 500 million discs ending up in landfills every year! It takes around 500 years for these discs to decompose.* A lot of these discs are actually still functional and a majority of damaged ones are repairable to a like new condition using our service.
A second reason to repair discs is the cost-savings. The money investment that you put into your discs can easily amount to a sizeable fortune. Imagine the cost of replacing just several scratched game discs which can cost up to €60 each. Now imagine being able to renew those discs for a few euro’s rather than replacing them with new ones. Optical discs still remains to be one of the most convenient ways to deliver, store and organise content and they will continue to do so for quite some time. Blu-ray is now becoming the preferred format video and storage disc especially with the new HD TV’s allowing for incredible graphics in movies and gaming, PS3 discs are now in Blu-ray format. Other disc types being currently tested are 3-D and even holographic discs.

Repairable Discs
With our advanced equipment it's possible to restore the read (play) surface of CD's, DVD's, and Game Discs back to a virtually new condition. In most cases discs that have scratches or scuffs can be restored to “as good as new condition”. This applies to discs that have damage to the read(play or shiny) side only.
Discs with damage to their play side go through a number of resurfacing cycles depending on the severity of the scratches on them and then a final polishing cycle is also applied. The resurfacing cycles removes layers in microns (millionths of a metre) from the read(play) side of the disc. Then a final polishing cycle is applied which gives the original new polished appearance. Discs shall be restored to 'As Good As New Condition'. Restoration work can only be carried out on the read(play) side of discs.
Please Note: Some discs can be double sided discs which play on both sides and any damage to both sides shall be charged accordingly, as two disc repairs. Most double sided discs have no graphic label on their top side, except maybe placed around the center positioning hole in the disc.
Non Repairable Discs
In some cases damage can occur on label side. Discs with damage on the label side are usually deemed un-repairable as they most likely have scratches or marks that penetrate into the foil/data layer on the label side of the disc. Any damage done to the label cannot be repaired, as this layer of the discs actually holds the information in the foil or stamped data layer. The simplest way to determine if your disc has label side damage is to hold the disc up to a light source and if you can see any lines or pinholes of light through the disc this means the foil layer is damaged beyond repair. Discs with label side damage may render the disc partially or completely unreadable. Other types of damage that occur to discs that cannot be repaired include discs that have cracks, dents, warped or chipped discs.
Please Note: It may be difficult to repair and restore deep scratches on Blu-ray or Playstation 3 game discs. This is due to the method of data storage on these discs. Data is stored very near the read side of these discs, about 8% away from the read side. This leaves very little margin for scratch repair to these types of disc.
